8th grade Sculpture: Students will create their own work with a wide variety of media such as paper, wood, clay, plaster, paper mache’ or fabric. Students explore various cultures, art history and learn to think and write critically about master work as well as their own.
Introduction (1st 3 weeks) Make class folder, go over procedures, elements and principles, art room scavenger hunt, collaborative creatures, Tape Out Project
Project 1: Renewable Energy Village Students create a paper sculpture Renewable Energy Village: each student signs up for a different part of the village. We learn about different paper sculpting techniques before we begin. The business/building must run off of a renewable energy source.
Project 2: African/Notan/Sumi Ink Paper Mache Mask Students research the history of African masks and Japanese Notan designs. They create plaster and paper mache masks. They use Sumi Ink for their designs.
Project 3: Pinch Pot Monster Students research 4 different animals, insects or sea creatures. They make a pinch pot monster that incorporates features from all of the creatures they researched.
Project 4: Bacteria Sculptures Students research how different viruses and bacteria look under the microscope. The bacteria images inspire the shapes and patterns they use in their sculpture.
Project 5: Coil Bowls Students research the history of bowls in various cultures and create coil bowls incorporating various patterns.
Project 6: Repurposed Paper Sculptures Students use recycled paper scraps, book pages, cardboard to create Louise Nevelson inspired sculptures.
